Welcome to the (super duper late) June 2021 edition of "collage art storytelling with tweets." about the technology industry’s reshuffling around the United States and the world post pandemic.
This episode chronicles the events of May 2021.
This guide in general will skew towards Miami (where I live currently) but also include Austin and Atlanta (where I also have lived and have knowledge of) among others.

Miami Tech Week represents the start of startup cities.

There's a lot of buzz about miami because of #miamitechweek and people have been asking me what I think about living and working in Miami for the past few months. My thoughts:

A real Silicon Valley connoisseur (YC founder, sold @nextravelinc to @travelperk, now VC @GradientVC), @wenwen, moved recently to Miami.
A bunch of reflections and learnings that explains why the moment is now. #miamitechweek is just a sign, but there's much more. #MiamiTech

Atlassian just set the bar which other tech companies must meet or exceed regarding remote work
A single decision that sets them up for success for the next decade and beyond + guarantees they’ll attract and retain great talent

Miami Tech Week represents the start of startup cities.
When Silicon Valley didn't innovate, the people who built Silicon Valley began building alternatives to Silicon Valley itself.

"@NomadList and teleport are search engines for individual digital nomads. What does a tool for collective migration look like?"
fascinating question from @balajis

California HAS to fix its relationship with tech, or what happened to Detroit in the 20th century will happen to us.
Tech workers are fleeing to low cost of living states, TX, UT, CO.
Tech money (VCs, PE) is fleeing to low-tax states, FL, TX.
This is real & its happening live.

Miami Tech Week is an important milestone in the history of startup cities.
It proves that the customer base for cities is not just mobile, but capable of collective choice. In other words, startup cities are now feasible because the market for cities is now manifest.

Coinbase is committed to being remote first. We announced we no longer have an HQ and as a next step, we’re closing our SF office (our former HQ) in 2022.

I knew Google would back off of their demand for all employees to return full time to the office. Just didn’t know it would happen so fast.

Sundar Pichai @sundarpichai

...spending time in another city for part of the year, or even moving there permanently. Google’s future workplace will have room for all of these possibilities. We’re moving to a hybrid work week with most Googlers in the office approximately 3 days a week.

I’m optimistic these changes will help us do our best work and have fun doing it, with about 60% of Googlers working together in the office a few days a week, 20% working in new office locations & 20% working from home. Here’s the note I sent to Googlers.

If Google – arguably the provider of the best office working experience on the planet – was forced to cancel plans to go back to the office full-time because its people want to work remotely
What do you think is about to happen inside every other company that tries it?

Every major tech company will need a work from home policy to attract and compete for the best talent.
WFH is way more inclusive than offices and a lot less environmentally pollutive.

The next Silicon Valley is in the cloud. Expect more remote-first companies and decentralized protocols from here on out.

Heard this from 100+ people:
1️⃣Company surveys team on how much remote work they want
2️⃣60%+ want remote 4+ days a week, 95% want 3+ days
3️⃣Company says they will allow remote 1-2 days a week
4️⃣Company SHOCKED by anger
Media won’t report this!

We announced our future of work policy:
🏢 6 hubs across the US
🕐 1-2 days/wk in hub's office for team mtgs & collab
🏠 3-4 days/wk focused work at home
5⃣optional 5 days/wk in office for whoever wants it

Going all in on remote first. Important to continue being an innovative company, that attracts top talent from everywhere, and can move quick.

I am humbled by this honor from Fortune & thankful to the people of Miami who have placed their trust in me to execute my vision for a Miami that Lasts Forever
Finally, Miami beat @TomBrady in something👀

I am hearing several senior engineers in hot fields in the EU getting +50-100% in compensation offers from US startups and tech companies... and many of their current employers matching, or partially matching them as counter-offers.
My theory on what's happening (cont'd):

It's not only EU. In Ukraine, where I've been hiring for almost a decade, situation is similar. Covid completely erased the borders for engineering talent. Stats below are from popular Ukrainian tech job board.

We also believe there’s a reason why civic companies are being founded all over the country, outside of SV. It’s why we’re launching our Civic Practice in the great city of Miami! Check out our conversation with @dee_bosa and @FrancisSuarez on TechCheck.

🚨🚨General Catalyst is opening a Miami Office 🚨🚨
Great to see other top-tier venture firms recognize the tech ecosystem here
The question is, do you really want to be a late adopter? Isn't the whole point of being a VC to be ahead of the curve on new trends?

Silicon Valley is no longer a metonym
for technology. It is, like Redmond before it, a metonym for what technology is disrupting.

The new information is that tech can indeed drive change…just not in SF, CA, USA.
Focus instead on the subnational, international, and technological.
Subnational: Austin, Miami, Wyoming
International: Estonia, Dubai, Taiwan
Technological: Bitcoin, Ethereum

BREAKING NEWS: The Texas #Bitcoin bill HB4474 Passed the Senate this morning and is on its way to @GregAbbott_TX to become law!
Thank you so much @AngelaPaxtonTX & @TanParkerTX for supporting our legislation and making Texas a welcoming home for Bitcoin!

A lot of people don't know this, but Miami has had a huge impact on the crypto space for years now. As books get written on the story of blockchain and meaningful moments along the way, expect to see Miami mentioned in many chapters.

Zoom has anchored us now on zero travel time to attend a meeting, so the idea of driving 45 minutes to get to a meeting makes the "cost" of attending even more challenging.

First of all: Don't sleep on University of Miami, FIU, UF; But also: Startups used to mean almost exclusively research (biotech, semiconductors, even Google). Now startups means engineers tackling problems in every part of the economy
